SMSF Core

User guide

How SMSF Core is used

Each module in the order most funds meet them. Everything below works from figures you enter or upload; every calculated figure in the product cites the ATO source it came from.

Getting started

One fund, one login. Everything starts from the dashboard, and the whole product runs on figures you bring in yourself.

  1. 1.Sign in and name your fund. There is nothing to install and no card required during the beta.
  2. 2.Upload your broker trade history as CSV from the dashboard. Parcels build themselves from buys and sells, matched last-in-first-out.
  3. 3.Add the dividends your holdings received, either by typing them in or by uploading a dividend statement PDF and confirming what it suggests.
  4. 4.Read your position: 45-day status per parcel, the refund estimate, and an audit export when you need one.

Broker trade files do not contain reinvested dividends, transfers from another broker, or corporate actions. The upload screen tells you when it sees signs of these, and the fix is a manual entry.

M1 Franking and the 45-day rule

The core module. Every dividend is matched to the parcels that earned it, and each match carries a qualified, at-risk or not-qualified status with the section of the Act it comes from.

  1. 1.After trades and dividends are in, open a dividend to see its parcel matches and each parcel's days at risk against the 45-day requirement.
  2. 2.The dashboard chart shows your refund position building through the year: solid for qualified credits, dashed for credits still inside their window.
  3. 3.Generate an audit package from the Audit export page when your accountant or auditor asks. It is a fixed snapshot with every citation printed.

Contribution caps

Tracks concessional and non-concessional contributions per member against the year's caps, including carry-forward and bring-forward.

  1. 1.Register your fund's members once on the Caps page. Date of birth is optional and only used for age-based rules.
  2. 2.Record contributions as they happen. Each member's card shows the position against both caps.
  3. 3.For bring-forward capacity, record a 30 June balance on the Division 296 page. The caps page reads it from there and shows your tier.

Pension minimums

Saves each member's pension balance once and tracks payments against the statutory minimum, so 30 June never surprises you.

  1. 1.On the Pension page, save a pension: the member, the 1 July balance, and the commencement date if it started mid-year.
  2. 2.Record payments as they are made. The card shows the minimum, what has been paid, and what remains.
  3. 3.A shortfall warning appears while there is still time to fix it. A pension that misses its minimum loses exempt income treatment for the whole year.

Division 296 tracker

Follows each member's total super balance against the $3 million and $10 million thresholds and estimates exposure under the two-tier rules.

  1. 1.Record each member's balance with an as-at date. The card shows the distance to the threshold.
  2. 2.Add an earnings estimate when you have one to see the two-tier tax estimate. For multi-member funds the final attribution comes from an actuarial determination, so treat entries here as tracking figures.
  3. 3.Record what your fund decided about the cost-base-reset election, including that it is still deciding. The election lodges with the 2026-27 return, so the window is open.

Practice workspace, for accountants

A read-only status board across client funds. Trustees grant access themselves and can revoke it at any time; the board shows counts and dates, never dollar figures.

  1. 1.Create your practice and share your invite link with clients who use SMSF Core.
  2. 2.A trustee who accepts sees exactly what they are sharing before they consent.
  3. 3.Invite up to three colleagues by email during the pilot. They sign in with the invited address and activate their seat.

The workspace is deliberately read-only and dollar-free in this phase. Fuller exports for practices are planned as a paid feature with a separate trustee consent step.

SMSF Core is an information tool, not a licensed financial service. There is a sample fund with data already in it at app.smsfcore.com/demo.
